3101 Southern Avenue; Temple Hills, MD

This stone is a replica created in 2015 and placed in early 2016 about twenty yards southwest of its original location. In mid-2020, the replica stone was knocked over, and its fence was destroyed, in a traffic incident. Both were thereafter repaired.

By the time of Woodward's visit more than a century ago, the original stone was "rounded, battered and chipped on every side" possibly because "soldiers used it as a target" during the Civil War. When a truck knocked the stone out of place in 1985, the manager of a nearby apartment building moved it into the building's boiler room for safekeeping. There it sat until 1991, when the building manager gave the stone to the bicentennial resurveying team for what turned out to be another two decades of safekeeping. In 2012, the stone arrived at the D.C. Office of the Surveyor, where it remained on display for several years. It was then loaned to the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, originally for inclusion in the First Congress exhibit but now on long-term display.

To visit the original stone, enter the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center, pass through the doors after the metal detectors, take a left and then make a right. Take the escalator on your right to go downstairs. At the bottom of the escalator, make a U-turn to your right. The stone is located about 30 feet away on your left.
